Travel eSIM help: choose, install and get connected

Travel eSIMs are easier to choose when you know what to check before paying. This guide takes you from phone compatibility to the first connection after landing.

Before you buy

Check that your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked

Support varies by exact model, region and carrier. On an iPhone, open Settings > General > About. “No SIM Restrictions” beside Network Provider Lock means the phone is unlocked. On a Pixel, look under Settings > Network & internet > SIMs for an option to add an eSIM. If you cannot confirm compatibility, ask your device maker or current carrier before buying a travel plan. You can also browse our eSIM Compatible Devices guide.

Choose for the full route, not just the arrival airport

Check that the plan covers every destination on your itinerary and lasts for the entire trip. Compare the total price, data allowance, local network partner where disclosed, hotspot rules and any high-speed cap. An “unlimited” plan may still slow down after a fair-use threshold. Coverage can vary within a country, especially on remote routes or indoors.

Read the validity rule

Some plans begin when installed; others begin when they first connect to a supported network. A provider may use another activation rule. Read it before purchasing or installing so the plan does not expire earlier than expected.

Installing your eSIM

Use a reliable connection

Follow the provider's app, QR-code or manual setup instructions while connected to Wi-Fi. Keep the activation QR code private. On iPhone, installation is generally under Settings > Cellular or Mobile Data > Add eSIM. On Pixel, it is generally Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Add SIM > Set up an eSIM. Menu names can vary by device and software version.

Do not delete a plan just because setup pauses

Some activation codes cannot be reused. If installation stalls or shows an error, check the provider's instructions or contact its support team before removing the eSIM.

Getting connected after you land

Turn on the travel eSIM and choose it as the mobile-data line. Follow the provider's roaming and APN instructions if the connection does not start automatically. If your home SIM stays active for calls or texts, check its roaming settings and charges. Selecting the travel eSIM for data does not automatically prevent charges on the home line.

If mobile data does not work

Confirm that the plan is active and covers your exact destination. Check that the travel eSIM is on and selected for mobile data. Review the provider's roaming and APN instructions, then try airplane mode or restart the phone. If the problem remains, contact the provider with your order reference, phone model, location and error message. Never post the activation QR code publicly.

Common questions

Does a data-only travel eSIM include calls and SMS?

Usually not. Check the exact plan. You may be able to keep your home number active alongside the travel eSIM, but your home carrier's charges still apply.

Can I use hotspot?

Only if the provider and plan allow it. A phone that supports hotspot does not make every plan eligible for tethering.

Will I get 5G?

That depends on your phone, the plan, the provider's roaming access and local coverage. A 5G-capable device or coverage map is not a guarantee of 5G on a travel eSIM.

Should I install before departure or after arrival?

Install while you have a reliable connection, but first check when your chosen plan's validity starts. If installation starts the validity clock, wait until the provider recommends installing.
